the page a CFO actually read

hint: not a 55-slide deck

I've read through the post-mortems on 100+ million dollars in closed deals.

Won deals. Lost deals. Ghosted deals.

I have seen the patterns, and trust me - the lost deals did not have worse pitches

They had worse forwards. The people who received the emails or calls.

In this post, I'm going to show you the 5 things the winners did differently after the call, starting with the easiest one.

It was three Thursday's ago, 40 person SaaS company. One on one call with the VP, who loved the product.

Towards the end of the conversation, he said that he needed to run it by his CFO.

Old me would have sent a beautiful 600 word recap at 9 pm, when the call ended at 11.

New me sent a one page email in his inbox before he even opened his laptop.

Laid out the problem he was trying to solve in his own words, his numbers, and a line for the CFO - the payback period was under 4 months.

All in fifth grade English, intentionally.

He forwarded the email to his CFO 22 minutes later. My phone notified me that his CFO viewed the email - and spent 2 minutes on the pricing section.

The check signer for a 42 thousand dollar deal, reading my email. Someone I've never talked to.

I called the VP the next day, as it was still fresh in his mind, and we signed the contract a few days later. 4 weeks from first email to a signed deal. My usual time frame is 5-6 weeks.

So that's the first rule - arming the messenger.

The rest of them are much more interesting - one of them is a question that can ruin 9/10 of your recap emails and pitches (yes, I made this mistake dozens of times at Outreach), another tells you exactly when to follow up, and the last one shows you how to build such a pitch in under 5 minutes - that's right, I'm going to show you how to make one on screen while writing this post.

I put all 5 in a video. Every rule, plus the live build.

Lemme know which rule hits hardest in the comments.

Talk soon,
Andy "Arm The Messenger" Mewborn
